Archive of Past Graduate Wellness Weeks - (Read More)

For the last few years, Western has run Western Wellness Week in October. Last year, SOGS partnered with SGPS and Student Experience to host PhD Comic author, Jorge Cham, in November, and screened the PhD Comic movie both in November and in March, in an effort to bring more visibility to graduate student experiences. This year, we are hosting The Lego Grad Student at our Wellness Research Forum on October 4. Read on for details!

This year, with support and funding from SGPS, Student Experience and the Wellness Education Centre (WEC), Studentcare, Canadian Federation of Students, TD Bank, the Grad Club, Research Western, Michael King (SOGS Accountant), Graduate Peer Support (GPS), and the Academic, Grad Club, Gradcast, Orientation & Social, Equity, and Health Plan Committees, SOGS is hosting GRADUATE WELLNESS WEEK: October 2-October 6.

Our aim is to highlight the important work done by graduate students and to foster a more wellness-minded graduate student community at Western.

The Lego Grad Student

Talk title: “Why Am I Here? A Questionable Afternoon with Lego Grad Student”

Whether you care to openly admit it or not, the first month of grad school has probably felt like a sledgehammer repeatedly slamming into your face and soul. Spend an hour with Lego Grad Student as he attempts to explain why this is a perfectly normal–but not inevitable–feeling, and offers painfully learned advice on how you can manage it. (Satisfaction absolutely not guaranteed.)

As his social media accounts state, Lego Grad Student is “a hollow head struggling to make it through a blocky world.” His page documents the small daily existential struggles of graduate school life, with hopes that students realize that they should not feel alone in or embarrassed to talk about about their problems. So far, this has resonated with over 90,000 followers (and growing). Lego Grad Student–or really, the creator behind him–has a PhD in the social sciences and lives somewhere on the West Coast of the United States. Find him @legogradstudent on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Tumblr.
