Bus Pass

All full-time SOGS members are part of the mandatory, universal bus pass program. This was put in effect after a March 2002 vote which was overwhelmingly in favour. The bus passes are only available to full-time graduate students and there is neither an opt-in option for part-time graduate students, nor an opt-out for the full-time graduate students.

If you are a full-time graduate student who is on co-op your bus pass eligibility depends on your tuition during your co-op term:

  • If you pay full-time fees while on co-op, you are eligible for a bus pass during your co-op term.
  • If you pay part-time fees while on co-op, you are not eligible for a bus pass during your co-op term.

The bus pass fees are outlined on the fee information page.

For more information regarding the bus pass, please contact the SOGS Office. For receipts regarding the bus pass, please contact the SOGS Accounting Manager.

Returning students

Over the next few years, Western and London Transit are phasing out the old paper bus pass and are implementing a tap pass system that will use new student cards as the bus pass.

For the fall 2016 semester: All full-time graduate students  will continue to pick up their paper bus pass from the SOGS Office (UCC 260).

Regardless of how the bus pass is distributed, the graduate student bus pass contract is negotiated and managed by SOGS, specifically the VP Student Services. If you have any questions about the bus pass, please contact us.

New students

Over the next few years, Western and London Transit are phasing out the old paper bus pass and are implementing a tap pass system that will use new student cards as the bus pass.

For the fall 2016 semester: All full-time graduate students (new and returning) will continue to pick up their paper bus pass from the SOGS Office (UCC 260).

New graduate students who obtain a new student card may be able to use their student card as a tap bus pass throughout the fall semester. However, new students should still pick up their paper bus pass from the SOGS Office to ensure they are able to ride the bus immediately, as their student card may not be active for up to 48 hours.

Regardless of how the bus pass is distributed, the graduate student bus pass contract is negotiated and managed by SOGS. If you have any questions about the bus pass, please contact us.

Reporting bus pass information for taxes

To claim bus pass fees on your taxes, the exact fee paid per student is available from Student Centre. Under Detailed Statement of Account, you may check the fees paid for each term of the last calendar year.

Lost or stolen bus pass

If your bus pass has been lost, please complete the online form to report it to the SOGS Office. Reporting your card as missing can help to protect you in case of bus pass fraud.

Replacement bus passes are available from the SOGS Office (UCC 260). To collect a replacement pass, you must provide your student card and $20 (cash only).
