September 2016: Council Summary

The following provides a brief summary of the recent Council meeting on August 25. The complete Council package, which includes the agenda and reports, can be accessed online. Full minutes of the March Council meeting will be available in the April 2016 Council package.

This summary is provided to increase transparency, and to support Councillors in completing their obligations under Bylaw 2.3.5; “shall regularly communicate with his or her constituents concerning the activities, programs, and decisions of the Society”.

Announcements

  • Congratulations to Madison Bettle on being acclaimed to the position of VP Student Services.
  • Congratulations to kirstyn seanor on being reelected to the position of VP Advocacy.
  • Welcome to all of the members who were ratified to committees at tonight’s Council.
  • There is a petition, sponsored by the MP David Christopherson, to take measures to give priority to international graduate students in the application process for permanent residency: https://petitions.parl.gc.ca/en/Petition/Details?Petition=e-572
  • As per Motion 3, the Health Plan Committee is striking a working group to consult on the RFP (request for proposal) that will be distributed for the next tendering process of the health plan. If you have any questions or feedback, please contact James Hughes (jhugh54@uwo.ca)
  • The anonymous online questionnaire regarding the sexual violence policy development that is ongoing includes five questions and will remain open until tomorrow, September 30, 2016. Motion decisions

Reminder: Motions generally include several clauses providing the background or justification of a motion followed by one or several resolutions. The resolutions are the specific actions being proposed. For brevity, resolutions use the initialisms BIRT (be it resolved that) and BIFRT (be it further resolved that).

Motions arising from the President/Executive

Motion 1 (President)

PASSED

BIRT the SOGS Council year correspond to the academic year, with the first Council meeting of the year occurring in September.
BIFRT departmental grants be calculated for the Council year as opposed to the calendar year.
BIFRT SOGS use enrollment projections from SGPS as of September 1st to determine councillor representation.

 

Motion 2 (President)

REFERRED BACK TO EXECUTIVE

BIRT the number of council seats be calculated on a base of 60 seats instead of 120.

 

 

 

 

Motions arising from Other Committees

Motion 3 (HPC)

PASSED

 

Whereas the HPC wants to understand the opinions of Council regarding potential changes to the health plan, ahead of the next tendering process;
BIRT SOGS Council strike a working group to discuss the specifics for the RFP (request for proposal).
