Graduate student leaders play an important role in strengthening the SOGS community through governance, advocacy, programs, services, and student engagement. This program recognizes individuals whose leadership and service have made a meaningful impact on SOGS and its members.
Categories of Recognition
SOGS Service Awards
SOGS Services Awards recognize outstanding contributions within specific categories of student leadership roles.
(a) SOGS Service Award (Volunteer)
Recognizes individuals who demonstrate consistent contribution and active participation within the SOGS community (e.g., Councillors, Committee members, Directors)
(b) SOGS Service Award (Lead Volunteer)
Recognizes individuals who demonstrate initiative and leadership (e.g., Commissioners, Coordinators, Committee Chairs, Peer Advisors for Academic Matters, CRO)
(c) SOGS Service Award (Organizational Leadership)
Recognizes individuals who demonstrate outstanding leadership at the organizational level (e.g., Executive Committee members, Board Chair, Speaker, Deputy Speaker)
These awards recognize individuals who have demonstrated excellence, initiative, and commitment within their respective roles. Multiple recipients may be selected within each category, where deemed appropriate by the Nomination and Awards Committee.
SOGS Medal of Service
The SOGS Medal of Service will be the highest form of recognition awarded by SOGS. This award recognizes individuals whose contributions to SOGS are considered exceptional, noteworthy, and/or extraordinary in nature.
The Medal of Service may recognize individuals who:
- Have demonstrated sustained leadership and service within SOGS
- Have held multiple leadership roles over time
- Have made contributions that significantly strengthened SOGS governance, initiatives, or community impact
The Medal of Service may not necessarily be awarded every year.
Eligibility
Eligible nominees must be graduate students or SOGS alumni who have held leadership roles within SOGS. Staff members are not eligible for this recognition program, as the program is intended to celebrate student leadership and volunteer contributions.
Nominations
Nominations for awards may be submitted by:
- Graduate students
- SOGS alumni
- SOGS staff
Self-nominations are not accepted.
Deadline: Sunday, September 13th, 2026
Presentation of Awards
Awards will be presented at the SOGS Annual General Meeting (AGM) in October 2026.
